Published in the Egyptian journal al-Muqtataf in 1896 in the wake of the assassination of Irán's Násiru'd-Dín Sháh, for which many at the time wrongly blamed the Bábís or Bahá'ís, who were both at that time often referred to simply as Bábís. The editors introduced it thus:
There has recently been a great deal of talk about the Bábí religion as a result of the death of the late Násiru'd-Din Sháh. We therefore suggested to the erudite scholar Sayyid Mírzá Fadlu'lláh al-Irání [Mírzá Abú'l-Fadl] that he write for us a full-length article on their history and a summary of their teachings. For we found him to be a knowledgeable research scholar concerning the history of the East, intimately acquainted with the Bábí religion. He favored us with the following piece:
